Protests involving tens of thousands of people have taken to the streets in Russia’s far east demanding the resignation of President Putin and the release of a jailed governor.

Demonstrators in Khabarovsk, near the border with China, marched after Sergei Furgal was arrested last week to face murder charges in Moscow.

Built 1,500 years  ago the world-famous site was originally a cathedral before becoming a mosque in 1453. In 1934  it became a museum and is now a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Within hours of the ruling Erdogan had declared the Hagia Sophia open for Muslim worship and signed a decree handing it over to Turkey’s Religious Affairs Presidency.

But the set-up will be far from normal this weekend. The usual back-slapping and cheek-kissing will be replaced by social distancing in the presence of mask-wearing aides. The army of reporters that flock to the summits has also been banned from taking the usual seats in the expansive foyer of the Justus Lipsius building next door to the Europa.

The European commission forecasts an 8.3% drop in economic activity across the EU this year followed by a 5.8% rebound in 2021 but countries are expected to emerge from the crisis at starkly different speeds, risking a breakdown in the bloc’s single market as the disparity between Europe’s haves and have-nots is exacerbated

In addition to Mr Mueller’s team, “Congress also investigated and sought information from Stone” in 2017, Mr Mueller wrote.

“A jury later determined he lied repeatedly to members of Congress. He lied about the identity of his intermediary to WikiLeaks. He lied about the existence of written communications with his intermediary. He lied by denying he had communicated with the Trump campaign about the timing of WikiLeaks’ releases. He in fact updated senior campaign officials repeatedly about WikiLeaks. And he tampered with a witness, imploring him to stonewall Congress,” Mr Mueller wrote, referring to Mr Stone’s connection with Russian government agents who leaked hacked emails from the Clinton campaign to Wikileaks during the 2016 campaign.

Catalonia has registered 816 new cases in the past 24 hours. The Segria region is said to have accounted for 190 of the total.

Two days ago the Catalan government ruled out the lockdown rule it is now bringing in, saying it believed the mandatory use of face masks could help combat the spread of the virus.
