Thousands of extra medical, dentistry and science students will start at university this autumn after a cap on places was lifted and extra funding announced. Michelle Donelan, the universities minister, said that students should be guaranteed places at their first-choice university, either this year or next, if they had been made an offer. She also announced that universities would be free to recruit as many medical students as they wanted. The numbers are usually strictly controlled by the government.
