China’s expanding network of infrastructure and overseas investment projects pose a danger to America and the free world, the US secretary of state has warned in a further sign of the deepening rift between the two superpowers.
Mike Pompeo, who has been among the strongest critics of China in the Trump administration, said that its initiatives presented a risk “to the United States and to all free nations”.
Schools in Austria, Belgium and Portugal also reopened their doors for the first time in weeks on Monday, while more children were allowed to return to lessons in Greece.
Lessons have already resumed for pupils in France, Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Norway, Denmark, Australia, parts of Canada and China as the global spread of disease slowed.

“The FDA is aware of reports of serious heart rhythm problems in patients with COVID-19 treated with hydroxychloroquine or chloroquine, often in combination with azithromycin and other QT prolonging medicines. We are also aware of increased use of these medicines through outpatient prescriptions,” the agency said. “Therefore, we would like to remind health care professionals and patients of the known risks associated with both hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine. We will continue to investigate risks associated with the use of hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine for COVID-19 and communicate publicly when we have more information.”
Fengman District has recorded 12 cases of local infection in the same period and was put on lockdown starting today after a 15-point directive from the local health commission.
The travel restrictions include bans on all outbound foot and vehicle traffic, as well as the closure of schools and entertainment venues such as cinemas, gyms and restaurants.
